SAA Appoints White Interim CEO Phillip Saunders

Saunders appointment reflects the continued arrogance of Pravin Gordhan who seems hell-bent not to appoint Africans into any CEO role.

SAA has appointed Mr Phillip Saunders as its interim Chief Executive Officer, a move that has been rejected by some organisations in South Africa.

The African transformation Movement (ATM) has come out guns blazing and rejected SAA's decision to appoint a white male as the entity's chief.

Mr Suanders was first appointed as SAA's Chief Commercial Officer in 2019 but his experience was based only on a tiny operation in an island known as Kuwait. He has not completed a year in that role but is now appointed a CEO.

"The Interim CEO will be Mr Phillip Saunders, an experienced airline executive with a strong commercial background, and he will work closely with the interim board to appoint an interim management team that must implement a fundamental restructuring of SAA led by the new interim board," said the Department of Public Enterprises in a statement.

ATM has questioned how Saunders qualified for a work permit in the country when being a commercial officer is not listed as a scarce and critical skill.

"Saunders appointment reflects the continued arrogance of Pravin Gordhan who seems hell-bent not to appoint Africans into any CEO role", reads ATM statement.

ATM also accused Pravin Gordhon of interfering with the process of the appointment of Mango Airline CEO 'so that he could appoint his pliable white matriculant CEO.'

"Gordhan could not have done this without consulting President Ramaphosa. We therefore hold both of them accountable for their insolance to transformation and undermining the redress laws of this country," ATM statement.
