[Breaking News] Transmission of COVID-19 by Asymptomatic Individuals Very Rare, WHO Says

"From the data we have, it still seems to be rare that an asymptomatic person actually transmits onward to a secondary individual"

The World Health Organization has revealed that spread of coronavirus by asymptomatic individuals is very rare.

This was revelaed by Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, head of WHO’s emerging diseases and zoonosis unit during a news briefing held at the United Nations agency’s Geneva headquarters.

"From the data we have, it still seems to be rare that an asymptomatic person actually transmits onward to a secondary individual," Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove said.

It is now known that some individuals who get infected with coronavirus do not develop symptoms at all until the virus clears. Some may go for days before they fall sick without showing signs that they are infected.

“We have a number of reports from countries who are doing very detailed contact tracing. They’re following asymptomatic cases. They’re following contacts. And they’re not finding secondary transmission onward. It’s very rare,” Dr. Van Kerkhove added.

This new information from WHO is going to have a huge impact on how countries deal with COVID-19. Now that this is known, it is going to be important that countries take measures to ensure that those who are known to be infected, are isolated and do not make contact with other people.

“These findings also suggest that to control the pandemic, it might not be enough for only persons with symptoms to limit their contact with others because persons without symptoms might transmit infection,"she added.
