Health Minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize Launches Health Scooter Project Amid COVID-19

This is the kind of innovation we would like to encourage across all provinces.

Minister of Health Dr. Zweli Mkhize launched a multi-purpose Scooter Project in the Eastern Cape on Friday. During the launch, Dr Mkhize tested one of the scooter units which he say can also be used as a mobile clinic.

"Today, we launch the Scooter Project in Eastern Cape. These multi-purpose units are extremely versatile and can transport patients or deliver medication in rural communities," Dr Zweli said.

"While we are facing the challenge of COVID19, we must strengthen our healthcare system. We must use COVID19 to improve our services as we move towards the NHI," he added.

Mkhize said the Scooter mobile units will bring health care closer to communities. The units have off-road capabilities and are equipped with waterproofing and drip stands.

"It can be converted to an ambulance or even a mobile clinic. This is the kind of innovation we would like to encourage across all provinces," Mkhize tweeted.

He went on to congratulate the provinces MEC for Health for initiative and said that he believes it is a pioneering project.

"I would like to thank and congratulate SAHPRA for the huge amount of work done to assess and validate prospective testing kits and other health products," said Dr Mkhize.
