Mkhwebane Was Not Personally Involved In Raising R260,000 For Personal Cost Order

"Any person that needs information regarding the Public Protector's personal costs contribution which was done by many ordinary SAns can do so through us"

Public Protector Advocate Mkhwebane was not personally involved in raising funds for her Concort's personal cost order, Democracy In Action says.

This comes after journalist Karyn Maughan demanded that Mkhwebane makes public all names of the people who contributed towards her personal cost order settlement.

"Advocate Mkhwebane continues to argue Pres Ramaphosa directly benefited from CR17 campaign and must declare his donors. Now unknown donors have paid her legal bill and may well do so in the future - given she currently faces 3 personal costs orders. Should she disclose who they are?" asked Karyn on Twitter.

Just hours after Karyn made her demands on Twitter, an organisation calling itself Democracy In Action responded with a tweet, calling for all those who need information regarding the Public Protector's personal costs contribution to contact it directly.

18 October 2019: Mkhwebane warned Personal cost order sets dangerous precedence.

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane told Parliament that making her pay legal bill for the work she performed in his office had set dangerous precedent for her office.

Advocate Mkhwebane revealed during her presentation to parliament’s justice and correctional services portfolio committee, that members of the public had raised R260,000 towards her personal cost order. Democracy In Action later confirmed in a tweet that the organisation was responsible for fundraising.

It is not clear yet as to why Karyn has ignored public information about how Mkhebane's personal cost order funds were raised.
