Botswana Passes Law Reserving Business To Citizens As From 1 June 2020


Botswana government has passed a new law called Industrial Development Act which reserves specified industrial licences to citizens only. 

"In exercise of the powers conferred on the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry by section 1 of the Industrial Development Act, 2019, the following Order is hereby made," reads the government gazette introduction line.

This act shall come into operation by the 1st of June 2020.

The published gazette makes public the list of industrial licences that shall be reserved 100% for citizens in terms of section 5 (5) (a) of the Act.

The new  law also reserves the registration certificate to operate certain manufacturing enterprises for Botswana citizens in terms of section 16 (2)(a) of the Act.
