"People are saying that I made empty threats to take her to court after her allegations last year."
MultiChoice has confirmed that the DStv Mzansi Viewers' Choice Awards have stripped Sjava of his double nominations after rape allegations surfaced. Sjava is accused of raping his former girlfriend and musician Lady Zamar.
The awards are scheduled to take place on the 14th of March 2020, at Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg.
This is a double blow for Sjava as he has also been removed from the Cape Town International Jazz Festival line-up, a moved that has divided music fans on social platforms. His song Umama was also tipped for the Song of the Year.
“The decision to remove Sjava’s eligibility, including cancelling his performance at the awards is not one that has been made lightly, but we believe is in the best interest of all parties concerned,” said Reggy Moalusi, executive head of corporate affairs at MultiChoice South Africa.
Sjava has since denied Lady Zamar's alleged rape accusations. In a state the musician released earlier this week, Sjava provided details of what happened on the day Zamar claims she was raped.
"[On] 5 December 2019: I met with police officers from Thohoyandou police station. They asked [me] about the night (in September 2017) that Lady Zamar accuses me of raping her and asked for a statement," read Sjavas statement.
"I gave my statement. They also got statements from some witnesses who were with us going to, during and coming back from the trip. "The police told me that I had not been charged and that they were, at this stage, only gathering evidence and statements so that they could send it to the prosecuting authority who would decide if the case should be charged (sic) and prosecuted."

"I did not rape her [Lady Zamar]," Sjava wrote.
"People are saying that I made empty threats to take her to court after her allegations last year. Ngithe mina [I said] last year I would follow legal processes to protect myself.
Sjava also questioned as to why have the police not charged him officially.
